Abdominal Etching

Abdominal etching uses VASER ultrasound and SAFElipo™ power-assisted liposuction to remove stubborn fat around the abdominal muscles, helping reveal sharper six-pack definition. In our clinic in London, the procedure is performed as a day case under TIVA at our CQC-regulated Baker Street clinic, with prices from £6,500.

Abdominal Etching for Sharper Muscle Definition

Abdominal etching is a focused, high-definition liposculpture procedure that uses with to selectively remove fat around the abdominal muscles. The aim is to reveal the natural inscriptions of the rectus abdominis and create a more defined, athletic abdominal contour.

The procedure works on two layers of abdominal fat. The deeper fat compartments are reduced with SAFElipo™ to improve overall abdominal shape and volume. The superficial fat layer is then sculpted with VASER along the pre-marked grooves of the abdominal anatomy, including the midline and transverse inscriptions, to enhance the muscle definition already present beneath the skin.

Abdominal etching is the abdominal component of the full procedure. When the concern is focused on the abdomen and flanks, abdominal etching can target these areas precisely. When further definition is desired across the chest and upper arms, a full HD Lipo procedure may be more suitable to address all areas together.

At Centre for Surgery, abdominal etching is performed as a day case under at our by consultant surgeons on the GMC Specialist Register with body contouring subspecialty training.

What Is Abdominal Etching?

Abdominal etching — also known as six-pack liposuction or ab etching — is a selective liposculpture technique that removes fat from specific zones around the abdominal muscles to enhance the visibility of the underlying musculature. It is distinct from standard liposuction in that the goal is not simply fat reduction but anatomical revelation: the procedure traces and highlights the natural structure of the rectus abdominis rather than uniformly removing fat across the abdomen.

Two complementary technologies are used in combination. emulsifies fat cells selectively in the superficial fat layer — the thin layer immediately above the muscle fascia — while preserving the surrounding connective tissue. This allows very precise work along the abdominal inscriptions without disrupting adjacent tissue. VASER also promotes skin retraction, which contributes to the skin surface quality of the final result. then extracts the emulsified fat with minimal mechanical trauma, producing less bruising than traditional liposuction techniques.

If the abdominal muscles are well-developed, the result can be dramatic. If the muscles are underdeveloped, the result will be limited regardless of fat removal. Patients achieve the most defined outcomes where underlying muscle development already exists and the residual fat layer is thin.

The procedure can be combined with or a where additional abdominal concerns are present.

Am I Suitable for Abdominal Etching?

Abdominal etching is a sculpting procedure, not a debulking one. Suitable candidates already exercise regularly, have developed abdominal musculature, and want to remove a residual layer of subcutaneous fat that is preventing their musculature from showing through.

Candidates suitable for abdominal etching generally meet the following criteria:

The most common reasons for not qualifying are excess body fat (pinch test above 2 cm or BMI above 30) and insufficient muscle development. Both can be addressed before surgery — losing further body fat and developing the abdominal musculature through strength training may bring you into the suitable range at a future consultation.

The Abdominal Etching Procedure

Abdominal etching is performed as a day case under TIVA at our by GMC Specialist Register consultant surgeons with body contouring subspecialty training. The procedure takes approximately two to three hours.

All abdominal etching procedures are performed under — delivered entirely intravenously without inhaled anaesthetic gases. TIVA allows continuous monitoring of anaesthetic depth throughout and is associated with faster recovery and less postoperative nausea than inhalational anaesthesia.

Performed with the patient standing before the procedure. The surgeon maps the abdominal anatomy that will guide the sculpting — the midline, the transverse inscriptions overlying the rectus abdominis, the lateral borders of the rectus and the pelvic landmarks. These markings define the sculpting plan precisely.

The nursing team monitors you for one to three hours following TIVA. A responsible adult must take you home. Written aftercare instructions and the 24/7 clinical support number are provided on discharge.

Recovery After Abdominal Etching

Recovery from abdominal etching follows the same structured protocol as HD Lipo. Adherence to the lymphatic drainage massage schedule and compression garment use directly affects the quality of the final result.

Two manual lymphatic drainage sessions are scheduled in the first postoperative week. These sessions are clinically important — they drain swelling from the sculpted superficial fat areas and prevent fibrosis that would diminish definition in the final result. Additional sessions are arranged if needed.

Compression foam applied over the sculpted abdominal areas at the end of surgery, worn for three to four days. A compression garment is worn continuously for six weeks — remove only briefly for showering. Compression garments are not included in the procedure cost and must be purchased separately before your surgery date.

Managed with paracetamol as required. Most patients are comfortable by the end of the first week and off pain medication by around day eight to nine.

Most patients take one to two weeks away from desk-based work.

Light walking from day one. Gentle activity from two to three weeks. Full gym training and abdominal exercise from six weeks once the compression garment is removed.

Skin retraction over the sculpted abdominal areas is often visible as early as day three when the compression garment is first removed. VASER’s skin-tightening effect begins immediately and continues progressing for several months. Initial definition visible from six weeks. Full results at three to six months as all swelling resolves and skin retraction completes.

When Will I See Abdominal Etching Results?

Abdominal etching results emerge progressively over several months:

Maintaining weight and continuing to exercise after the procedure — particularly abdominal strengthening work — builds on the surgical result over time.

FAQs
What To Expect

Your consultation takes place at our Baker Street clinic with a consultant plastic surgeon on the GMC Specialist Register with body contouring subspecialty training. Your surgeon will take a full medical history, review all medications and assess your abdominal anatomy against the specific candidacy criteria for abdominal etching: BMI, skin elasticity, pinch test (must be less than 2 cm for superficial sculpting to be effective), underlying abdominal muscle development, fat distribution, and skin quality. They will advise on whether abdominal etching alone is appropriate for your anatomy, or whether the full HD Lipo session addressing the chest and arms would produce a more comprehensive result. Your surgeon will explain the VASER and SAFElipo™ technique, the preoperative standing marking protocol, the expected procedure duration, and the postoperative protocol including mandatory lymphatic drainage massage. High-resolution photographs are taken. Computer imaging may be used to illustrate anticipated outcomes. A mandatory two-week cooling-off period applies from the date you provide consent before surgery can be booked. The £100 consultation fee is redeemable against the cost of your procedure if you proceed. You are welcome to return for as many follow-up consultations as you need.

Once the cooling-off period has passed and you decide to proceed, the preoperative assessment team will contact you to complete your medical assessment and provide written preparation instructions. Stop smoking at least four weeks before surgery and for a minimum of four weeks after. Smoking impairs wound healing and is associated with delayed recovery and increased infection risk. This is mandatory. Stop aspirin and aspirin-containing medications at least one week before surgery. Stop anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen unless directed otherwise. Avoid herbal supplements for at least one week. Do not eat or drink for six hours before your procedure. Clear fluids — still water, black tea or black coffee — are permitted up to two hours before. Failing to observe the fasting period will result in postponement. Continue exercising in the weeks leading up to surgeryarriving with well-developed abdominal musculature improves the quality of the etching result. Purchase compression garments before your surgery date — these are not included in the procedure cost. Arrange a responsible adult to escort you home and remain with you for at least 24 hours. Book your two lymphatic drainage massage sessions for the first postoperative week before your surgery date — your patient coordinator will advise on scheduling.

Arrive at our Baker Street clinic at the confirmed admission time. A nurse will admit you, check your vital signs and prepare you for surgery. Your consultant anaesthetist will confirm fitness for TIVA. Your surgeon will confirm the operative plan and perform detailed preoperative standing body marking — the abdominal anatomy is mapped bilaterally to define the sculpting plan precisely. Abdominal etching is performed under TIVA as a day case. The procedure takes approximately two to three hours. VASER ultrasound emulsification is used first to selectively break down fat cells in the deep and superficial abdominal compartments. SAFElipo[https://lovesskin.co.uk power-assisted] cannulas then aspirate the deep fat to reduce overall abdominal volume, followed by fine cannulas sculpting the superficial fat along the marked inscription lines to reveal the rectus abdominis anatomy. Wounds are closed with dissolvable sutures. Compression foam is applied over the sculpted abdominal areas and a compression garment fitted before waking from TIVA. Once recovered, you are monitored for one to three hours. A responsible adult must take you home — driving is not permitted on the day.

24/7 clinical support is available for the first 48 hours. Our postoperative team calls you regularly for the first two weeks. Attend both lymphatic drainage massage sessions in the first postoperative week — these are clinically essential. They drain swelling from the sculpted superficial fat areas and prevent fibrosis that would diminish definition in the final result. Compression foam worn for three to four days — removed at the first massage session. Compression garment worn continuously for six weeks — remove only briefly for showering. Compression garments are not included in the procedure cost. Pain managed with paracetamol; most patients off medication by day eight to nine. Return to desk work: one to two weeks. Light activity: two to three weeks. Full gym training and abdominal exercise: six weeks. Postoperative clinic visits at days 3, 7, six weeks, three months, six months and one year — all included. Significant skin retraction often visible at day three. Full results at three to six months.
